1st News Agencies World Congress was held in Moscow on September 24-25, 2004 at the invitation of the Russian News Agency TASS which celebrated at the same time the one-hundredth anniversary of its foundation.

Dozens of world news agencies attended the Congress in which several researches and studies were conducted concerning cooperation ways between organizations representing the five continents of the world and the defense of their rights.

Organized by EFE News Agency of Spain, 2nd News Agencies World Congress was held in Estepona (Spain) on October 24-28, 2007. Representatives of news agencies gathered in this southern Spanish city for the second Congress to discuss the challenges the Internet age brought on the media. Anti-piracy measures, technological changes, the right to cover important events and the safety of journalists in areas of conflict were some of the topics mainly focused in the second News Agencies World Congress.

Argentine hosted the 3rd News Agencies World Congress on October 19-24, 2010 held by the National Argentinean News Agency, TELAM. The Congress was attended by delegations representing news agencies operating in the world’s various continents. During the Congress, throughout four work sessions, the attendees held extensive discussions and exchange of views on development of the news agencies to keep up with the cutting-edge technologies dictating the terms of modern communication era.

The 4th World Congress of News Agencies was held on November 17-21, 2013 in Riyadh, capital of Saudi Arabia. Organized by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the event was attended by heads of more than 70 world’s leading news agencies. In the Congress, it was urged the media to breast up to the technological challenges in contemporary information management in order to successfully continue their existence. The congress featured five plenary sessions titled: “New market products and services”, “Social media and other news digital platforms”, “Arabic language broadcasters’ perspective on news agencies”, “Capitalizing on new opportunities”, “How can news agencies support newspapers’ future needs?”.

The 5th News Agencies World Congress was held in Baku, Azerbaijan on November 15-18, 2016 under the title “New Challenges for News Agencies”. The Congress was hosted by the Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC) with the generous support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, and it attracted media experts and representatives from over 130 information agencies around the world. The discussions were divided into five sessions, focusing on topics such as: “The Future of News Consumption”, “Challenges and Opportunities of New Technologies and Social Media”, “News Agency Innovation”, “Training Journalists for a Multimedia Future” and “Protecting the Journalists”.
